I sent Redman and Smoker to work up a plan for the clubhouse. They’ve already left by the time I come down from Belle’s room. I feel pretty damn strange as I walk down the stairs. Part of me wants to whistle a tune, and skip a few steps. I haven’t felt like this in I can’t even remember when; maybe not since I was a little kid too young to know how messed up the world is. If I ever thought a thing like that.

Reality comes crushing back down when I spot Max and Felix outside with a few other brothers. Felix comes walking over. For once, he looks grimmer than me. His regular smirk is gone.

“You coming with?” he asks.

“Yeah, it’s about damn time I saw what they’re doing to the boss.”

Felix nods. “I reckon you’re the boss now, boss.” His grin returns for a moment. “But I agree. The fuck are they gonna do to ’em, you reckon?”

“It would be a bad move to hurt our president,” Max comments, fiddling with his revolver. “They must know what’d happen if they did a thing like that. They’d be better off just killing us. We’d have to go to war, real war. Hunt them down or die trying.”

“You’re right,” I tell him. “They won’t make a dumbass move like that.”

“They’re gonna try to blackmail us,” Felix mutters. “We all know what’ll happen if they try that. When we don’t pay, I mean.”

I clap him on the shoulder. “There’s no need to grow lady parts about it.”

We all laugh at that as we climb onto our bikes. But I get the sense that we’re all fake laughing, pretending like we’re okay with those bastards massacring half our club. We ride out in a staggered formation, making sure to loop around the woods a few times to throw anybody who might be following us off. Eventually we ride closer together as we join the main road toward town.

When we get close to town, Max pulls into the parking lot of an old bar. We follow, dismounting. He nods shortly to us and I nod to the other brothers. Quiet now, we all agree without talking about it. Alert. It feels odd to be skulking through town. I’ve never had to be so careful in Giant’s Drop before. We stick to the quiet streets, checking the corners as though we’re in a warzone.

Finally we come to the warehouse on the edge of town. I crouch down near a power box, peering through my binoculars. The warehouse is surrounded by a parking lot, and the parking lot is completely full of bikes. At least forty of them.

“Reckon he’s just putting on a show?” Felix asks.

“No damn clue,” I reply. “Max?”

He chews his lip and spits. “Impossible to say,” he mutters. “Though it is strange. Since when do they have these kinds of numbers to spare? My ops have told me they got less than this, brothers. Which means yeah, they’re either putting on a show, or they’ve called up some backup.
